Hi guys,

was in the news a while back, that expats working in indonesia would have to do some level of proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia.

From what I can tell, that has died a quiet death. Certainly haven't see it in the forms I have filled out to date.

Is this the case?

There was language that the sponsor company would need to "facilitate" language study, but I have heard no reports of this being clarified or enforced in any way. Regardless, the law places the onus on the company, not the employee, and says nothing of fluency.

We've had an immigration inspection late last year. One of the findings was that we did not have Bahasa Indonesia classes, so HR do run a weekly class now. Attendance is voluntary though.

Can you claim back for expenses too?

CB&TL if they have a Bank Mega card.

OT: Good thing they don't oblige anything (that has been proven to be) useless or impossible, but now it seems they just forgot to continue or had a brain freeze at the presidential regulation in 2018 when they arrived at the part of eh, what do we require from the TKA's again? And then you read interviews with Manpower officials in which they state article 26 should not be taken too strictly?!

I've lost count as to how many times I've tried to get a mega card, got cards from BCA/HSBC/Citi/DBS blablabla, some of them with just silly high limits, never once was that bloody Mega card approved. (10% off everything at Hypermart or something like that). Have given up trying, partly as since I've moved I don't even know where the nearest Hypermart is.

So, BCA upsize @ Starbucks it is.. ;)

Joking aside, they get a proper teacher in every week, block a meeting-room etc. If you really want to learn the opportunity is there. Which I think is quite a nice luxury my company gives to the 30-ish expats or so we have working for us. A few of them actually do make an effort as well, and it is quite nice to see that the locals generally appreciate the effort when the bules try their newly found Indo skils.
