Title : What is DeepSeek and how does it compare to ChatGPT? Chinese AI climbs to top of iPhone app chart
By : Saqib Shah , The London Standard , 28 Jan 2025

... The emergence of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI that can allegedly go toe-to-toe with US giant ChatGPT, has rattled global markets.

On Monday, US stock indices took a nosedive as jittery investors dumped tech stocks, spooked by fears that AI development costs had spiralled out of control. The sell-off sparked a trillion-dollar wipeout, according to Bloomberg, hitting US and European chipmakers, AI companies, and energy firms the hardest.

AI powerhouse Nvidia saw around $400bn (£321bn) wiped from its market value, while tech titans Meta, Google, and Microsoft also took significant hits...

DeepSeek’s AI looks and functions much like ChatGPT and other large-language models. It can answer questions, generate poetry and prose, and write complex code (the programming language used to build everything from apps to websites).

What sets it apart, however, is that DeepSeek claims to offer all of these functions (along with a few others) at a level comparable to its larger rivals, and all at a significantly lower cost.

In a research paper, DeepSeek’s engineering team revealed they only needed about $6m (£4.8m) in raw computing power to develop their new system – roughly 10 times less than Meta's investment in its latest AI technology, according to The New York Times...

Deepseek it seems according to current reports is heavy in Chinese propaganda. No responses on Tiananmen or Taiwan. My guess, totally Communist government controlled.

Meta, Google, and Microsoft did not take significant hits. They went back to their prices of a week ago. It could mean they have to pay a lot less in the future to build their models, so not in any way bad for them.

DeepSeek vs. OpenAI's ChatGPT

I believe DeepSeek will be banned soon, just like TikTok, and their CEO better not set foot in any Western countries lest be detained, just like Huawei's CFO.

I poked in on it and asked a question.

Got no response so...i fail to see how it's of any competition at the moment.

A good lesson to US arrogance.
"Chinese are stupid, they only know copying"
I don't know but in regards to DeepSeek, they admitted they got their data from Open AI. Is that copying?

That's really a ridiculous statement coming from a Frenchman. They have an incredibly vast knowledge of natural medicines, art, culture, thats thousands of years old. I just wish it could be put to good use to help the people around the world.
There is too much energy being put into power, and land acquisition, AI technology, through loans, and world wide construction projects. I don't believe this is being done out of generosity or compassion for others needs.
Indonesia needs to be careful as it's allowing large financial donors (Russia, China,) to come in and build and finance huge projects. For instance the new capital, and large developments on Bali.
Once they have their foot in the door, it will be too late to close it! 🙏

Why do you think French people are incapable of spotting American arrogance. I see nothing ridiculous in Balfrog's comment.
I don't see any relevance in the rest of your post to the OPs pop at American arrogance. They just look like an attempt to make yourself appear knowledgeable.

I admit, I might have gotten it all wrong. I didn't understand who was being insulted. The Americans, or the Chinese. I made the assumption it was the Chinese being belittled. I was just pointing out the many accomplishments the Chinese have achieved over the centuries. Who is being put down here? Who is copying?
Anyway, People becoming dependent on AI is a slippery slope. And arrogance is something many people have. It's easy to make a fool out of yourself.

Forgive me not taking your word on the above, but I like to know.
First up, Deepseek is chat.deepseek. I would guess that's to fish for Chat's user base.
I questioned both about Tiananmen and Taiwan.
DS gave me very guarded answers with little real information, but Chat opened up with information as I understand it.
I didn't see any propaganda as such.

DeepSeek is free and open source. You can download it and make it your own local version of DeepSeek. For example, if you are a China hater, you can modify DeepSeek to hate the Chinese government and it gives you the answers you want.

On the other hand, you cannot stop ChatGPT from censoring its own answers when it comes to the Israel/Palestine issue because it is a proprietary system and no one can access the source code.

US, Iraq invasion "justification"...
Or the Bay of Tonkin incident...
Or Panama invasion....
What is your problem with bashing the US? The topic is about The Chinese owned AI DeepSeek! Anyone that seeks information from AI is only looking for misinformation, or disinformation.
You should stick to presenting delicious food!

Quite a few people dislike the US, and that number is likely to increase quickly.
With threats to take over the Panama canal and wild tariffs, Trump might well make America grate again.
That's politics - something we prefer to ignore, but still sneaks up on us and bites.

I use AI a little, but never for facts. That will apply to this new one (if I ever bother with it).
AI is great for some tasks, but absolutely useless for anything that requires accuracy.
Google Maps is a fine example of AI messing things up. What was easily the best navigation app is now all but useless for getting from A to B. It's still amazing for information, but useless for anything else.
The big tech companies are all going mad for their share of the AI market, but none have considered how rubbish it is at most tasks.

Yep, I'm sure it has their answers for all those. None of which apply to China of course.
