Well, I did myself good.

Had a motorbike accident and messed up my knee badly:
  • compressed bone
  • compressed meniscus
  • sprained ligament
  • suspected torn ACL

Anybody has experience to share about ACL repair surgery in Jakarta?

My options are:
A. Private hospital in Jakarta
B. BPJS hospital in Jakarta
C. Private hospital in Penang

Open to advice and experience.

Thanks a lot!

Surgery of ACL is not always necessary. Takes 9 - 12 months to recover. Professional soccer player Miedema also torn her ACL couple of moths ago.

Someone I worked with went to Kedoya hospital when he did his acl.

I've heard it just heals by itself in a year or two, but of course if you are a professional sportsman then you need to accelerate the healing and also strengthen it, so surgery would be needed.
Should definitely see a doctor though, and long term physio.
By the way you left one off your list: pijat

Oww ouch and bugger! That all sounds very painful. Natural healing sounds better but I aint no doctor. Know a fellow had a motorbike accident and badly crushed ankle. Friends advised him to return to the US but he stayed on. Hospital was waiting the arrival of some implement or other and he finished up with an infection and having his leg amputated below the knee. Bear in mind specialists have a vested interest in surgery and have read of many painful and unsuccessful knee operations. Surgery and infections are common but good luck with whichever way you go.

Thank you for the advice everyone.

At this stage, it's suspected that it's completely torn so I don't think it could hela by itself in this case.

If it's partially torn, I would rather stay put for a year or so than do surgery.

I'm starting physio now for 2 weeks and will be examined again after because right now it's just too tensed an painful to do a proper physical exam.

My knee only hurts if I twist it. A sharp stabbing pain. It doesn't hurt when I walk but it does if I cycle.

I haven't been to the quack yet.

A few years ago I developed a very painful knee problem with the meniscus (I think) and twice since have had a bit of a problem. Each time I searched youtube for physio knee exercises and was able to overcome the problem. My researching knee treatments led to dismaying results of unsuccessful surgeries and many people being in more pain and worse off. I am sorry to say there is a pattern of needless surgeries across a swathe of medical conditions with greed apparently a significant motivator. There are of course many surgeries that are successful and even life saving. My inclination would be to explore physio exercises rather than move straight to the conventional medical response which usually starts with anti-inflammatories followed by cortisone injections and then surgery.

Good luck.

^ I just think it might be nice to know what it actually is but agree on the greed motive.

C is the right answer. Indonesia has good doctors but you have to find them first.

A friend of mine had a bad experience with surgery and orthopedics and recovery in Indonesia. They installed secondhand and inappropriate (by size) screws in his leg bones, and that was found on the revision in another hospital.

If you can not afford a big medical bill you go with BPJS and pay cash for upgrades. Chances are you will get things you don't need just so doctors and hospitals can get paid more and that could include a surgery you actually don't need.

If you can afford the big medical bill than Malaysia would be your choice. Their prices are very similar to Indonesia while having medical personnel better trained and certifications available for those that qualify. Many of their doctors have been foreign trained or have foreign updates to their training. You would of course have the added cost of travel and a hotel stay. If one were going to brunt the cost, I wouldn't even consider Indonesia.

What you may want to do is get your testing done in Malaysia. They have hospitals with very modern diagnostic equipment. You would at least know what is actually wrong so you can make better judgements for treatment. JMHO

My BF tore his 15+ years ago (up to 20 years ago as it was before I met him), he had a reconstruction done at the time but tore it again a few weeks later. So he is walking around without one all these years. Yes he has knee problems (he cant run anymore) but as long as he keeps the supporting muscles around his knee strong he is managing to maintain the integrity of the joint. He can hike/ bike/ do everything apart from jogging/ running.
Best of luck with the physio sessions and recovery.

I like this advice. Even if you don’t have it done there, you could get a second opinion in Singapore or so.

Yes, the doctor I saw told me that if my daily activities aren't strainous, they I can skip the surgery. But I do ride big motorbikes, long distance, off-road and so on.

So far, I've had a few quotes from hospitals in Penang, ranging from RM25K to RM50K, all in (surgery, hospital room, meds, physio) excluding flights and hotel.

On the lower end, it's half the price of quotes I've received in Indonesia.

Flights are $100pp return with AirAsia.

I think I've found a very good doctor here, recommended by a friend and someone who handles pro athletes in Indonesia. I got a very clear explanation of what's going with my MRI and he is not pushing me into surgery. He's waiting to be able to make a better diagnosis when the knee is in better shape.

If I eventually need surgery, I think I will elect to do it in Malaysia at a lower cost than here.

Wow, that’s quite a difference in price. I’m aware there’s quite some medical tourism; f-I-l from Medan went there. And half of all patients are Indonesian (so 250.000).

That's EUR 3000,- up to EUR 6000,-. For 1,5 h surgery and max 2 days in hospital.
Around EUR 3000,- makes more sense to me.

Stay sat down don't stand on the pegs

Hmm, forget off-roading then.

So what happened, @El_Goretto , care to elaborate?

Kepo! :pop2:

Well, very typical set up: car in front of me with dark windows tailing too close to the angkot in front of it, which I didn't see. The angkot did as angkot2 do and slowed down abruptly to pick up/drop off passengers and the car behind it/in front of it slammed the brakes.

At that moment, it's hard to remember what happened because it was so quick. I think I was preparing to overtake that car and suddenly realized I was about to hit it. I don't even remember if the car had brake lights or not but I know it was completely unexpected.

I knew I was gonna hit it and as I hit the brakes I started falling down. Again I don't know how because I have abs, so definitely not wheel lock.

Put my left food down to hold myself and that's when my knee bend the wrong way.

I managed to not fall, I did hit the car with my front tire but not very hard.

Parked the bike, screamed in pain.

My bike (KTM 390 adventure) was fully loaded for camping and fueled up, so about 170kg. Not sure about speed but wasn't going fast, maybe 60kph tops. Morning, quiet road, dry conditions, in Cianjur area.

No damage on the bike or the car.
