The Second Home Visa Impact on Ex-WNIs Thread

This is 5, not 10 years Thanks for summarizing all this!

    Possible 'Golden Visa' coming

Not sure about Indonesian, but the English phrase "to shoot oneself in the foot" seems appropriate Edit: I think Wisnu got it with senjata makan tuan

Hello from a soon-to-be ex from the US

It seems on par with, say, The Telegraph in the UK, so nothing wrong with reading that of course. I tend to like knowing about biases (though the left-right spectrum is inadequate) so I can apply my own internal filters. (My reading ranges from neoliberal magazines ro socialist ones)

Hello from a soon-to-be ex from the US

Ah, thanks. it's rated as right biased but mostly factual, which matches the impression I get from this story https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/de-telegraaf/

Hello from a soon-to-be ex from the US

There's always a ceremony, you have to take the oath in front of an officer before they will give you your certificate. In our case we asked for a name change as well, so it had to be done before a judge (a judicial oath ceremony). For those who don't they can get it done at the immigration...

Hello from a soon-to-be ex from the US

Thank you! And yes, the door is shut. It's not me, it's the Indonesian government... and also, we have career paths and lives here that are not available in Indonesia, and a kid born here to whom Indonesia is rather foreign (we tried introducing him to Indonesian food. It hasn't taken yet)...

Hello from a soon-to-be ex from the US

Well, today is the day. I'm officially an American! I guess being officially an ex WNI would take a long while, but I certainly won't use my Indonesian passport again

Ex Wni to be allowed to work, open up business and own property

Not sure about Indonesia, but here in the US they assess land value vs building value separately. Mine is roughly 1:3 between the land and the building

How Indonesian resort island Bali became a refuge for Ukrainians and Russians

In these cases it seems likely that they simply adopt more British practices than the US did -- since after all their independences were achieved less acrimoniously than the US'. FWIW - as a recent immigrant in the US, I sort of agree with both sides here. A nation gets to choose what kind of...

Indonesia Delays $20 Billion Climate Plan

The lack of battery to recycle, maybe (though note that batteries are getting recycled). But on the efficiency front -- both hydrogen and synthetic fuel can't win against battery EVs. You need to produce the hydrogen, entailing efficiency loss greater than charging up a battery. Synthetic fuels...

How Indonesian resort island Bali became a refuge for Ukrainians and Russians

I didn't realize it's that recent! And yeah, at the time I got one (2016) I think the ratio was 3 to 1, which was stressful enough. With a 9 to 1 ratio, even someone who graduates from a US graduate program (and thus can double-dip on the H-1B lottery - once for the advanced degree pool and once...

How Indonesian resort island Bali became a refuge for Ukrainians and Russians

People who complain about chain immigrations often haven't looked at how long it now takes. Sponsoring a spouse or parents takes about two years, a child (below 18) longer, siblings take decades. So in practice it's already heavily curtailed - the rhetoric by politicians does not really match...

How Indonesian resort island Bali became a refuge for Ukrainians and Russians

How does public pension work in the Netherlands? Curious. In the US, it's based on contribution (but capped, up to $160k or so right now) so those who live it up in the informal sector often regrets it when they reach retirement age. That being said maybe they plan to return to Indonesia when...

Indonesia Delays $20 Billion Climate Plan

EVs are still cleaner even when powered with coal by the way https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikescott/2020/03/30/yes-electric-cars-are-cleaner-even-when-the-power-comes-from-coal/?sh=6d396fd12320 Part of it is that power plants run at peak efficiency, while car engines do not (often they are...

Indonesia Delays $20 Billion Climate Plan

Yeah... there needs to be incentives provided to scrap older cars as well. But this would be pricey, so... cleaning the power grid first is probably a good idea anyway. Charging STNK based on how much a vehicle pollutes and how much it weighs too. Slowly start penalizing pollution but more...

How Indonesian resort island Bali became a refuge for Ukrainians and Russians

This was tried. A lot of the Republicans involved got primaried, so now we see that people only dare to buck the party orthodoxy when they are about to retire anyway

Agreed. Likewise with the opposite, "model immigrant" stereotype

Indonesia Delays $20 Billion Climate Plan

Indeed - Jakarta makes the top list of polluted worldwide cities frequently 😔 An old study put the cost at a loss of IQ points of around 2.5 IIRC, back when lead was still used as petrol additive. Using pollution reduction as the driver for environmental cleanup would be sensible

    Money transfers.

I feel doubly cheated now, in the US even their 'savings' account has terrible interest. I now keep the bare minimum there and pay my credit card bills by linking other bank accounts. Parking enough money to cover expenses, a 4%+ difference in interest adds up over time!
