Happy Eid-al-Fitr!

Deck out in my best sarung, peci and sendal jepit off I go to Pak Lurah’s Lebaran open house, as I gingerly parallel park my angkot I catch the drifting aroma from Pak Lurah residence.

The air is sweet with fresh galangal and lemongrass with smashed up ginger simmering slowly in extra virgin corn oil.

My only hope is ibu ibu won’t get a chance to shamelessly stuffing up their fake Hermes and Gucci bags with all the opor, rendang and kaastenggels nastar cookie before I finally get to reach the prasmanan buffet table.

Happy Eid for you and your family!

More than 123 million Indonesians are making their way home for the annual Eid holiday, the Transportation Ministry has estimated. That’s much more than the estimated 86 million people last year

Some 18 million people are estimated to have traveled from the DKI Jakarta alone.

With the Eid al-Adha (عيد الأضحى, Feast of Sacrifice) already taking place end of June, quite a lot of staff here in the area has opted to go home then btw. I’m not sure what the rationale is, perhaps also more convenient for the employers?

Selamat Idul Fitri.

I always try to leave the country for at least part of it (preferably the last week). There are so many things about it that make no sense, it's better just to go away and come back when people go back to normal.
Is it any worse than Christmas time in western countries? I guess not having a mudik tradition makes a huge difference.

There’s no escape. It will be more and more visible in western countries also. Just like the Christmas lights and decoration. And the music in the department stores.

That looks like Oxford Street, they'll celebrate anything there if it gets them a few more tourists.

Could be. Thought it was Piccadilly Circus. More and more cities in Europa are considering to start with street lights decoration during Ramadan. Probably Brussels will have it next year. Obviously there are quite some opportunistic politicians that have good reasons (not) to want it.

Quite amazing; a Chinese restaurant in Glodok -with only Chinese clientele- wanted to serve me beer in the teapot (as we’ve seen before) and did very difficult without wanting to give a glass. But a steak resto in JakTim where they played Ramadan music and which had all the ‘specials’ and decoration, located in a rather traditional and somewhat fanatic area, openly served me the bottle and did not make any difficulty.
