Crazy Aussie in Bali

....Australia is the closest bule-majority country to Bali, so OF COURSE that's where the drunken tourists come from. If the US of A was identical to what it is now, but swapped places geographically with Australia, how much you wanna bet that the typical drunken bule tourist in Kuta would be American?

Perhaps its just that Bali needs to refocus its promotions in the direction of America's closest outpost. Then we might see headlines like "Bali flooded by plane loads of drunken State of Hawaii residents."

Yes. I'm quite confident that a news search of obnoxious and obscene behavior in Mexican resort towns (Cabo San Lucas, Tijuana, etc, etc) by American college students would reveal far more and far worse than is common in Bali.

Same with the Brits/ Irish in certain Spanish resorts!

I guess white male entitlement is cross-cultural. The pattern seems to be pick the closest resort area populated by persons of color, go there and make an ass out of yourself.

It’s been 15 years since I’ve been to Tijuana, but there was no shortage of arrogant drunks, and women of questionable morals, the last time I went. And poor painted donkeys in the street.

Perhaps this is mistaken, but the lack of a moral compass I am thinking is not a gender specific trait, especially when fueled by alcohol and its fellow travelers.

I suspect you haven't been out late in Kuta for the last few years, understandably so. Because many females are catching up with the drink bule men

Well now you also have the couple at the temple with the holy water washing her genitals and claiming after 7 years there she didn't know it was a temple.

They have participated in a purification ceremony and expressed remorse. And while perhaps the Balinese are mollified, I am wondering if immigration is going to dig deeper on what they are doing for 7 years in Bali on a tourist visa (hint: digital nomads....lol)

Yes someone reported them already on a Facebook group and tipped off immigration

To me it is more about the contrast. With Mexico and Spain, they don't have as contrasting of cultures from the drunk tourists visiting them. The western values regarding sexuality, nudity, alcohol, and drugs are more the same than they are different.

Who would do that? Yes, they are rude and disrespectful. But to tip off immigration is just sheet nastiness.

Happens in bali quite frequently ,IMHO one has to keep a low profile ,and keep some distance from most of the locals ,otherwise the smile can quickly turn into a scowl . We are always foreign with limited rights here .

Sending them to the temple to participate in a purification ceremony is an elegant way to teach them a lesson and to give an example to other tourists. Better than mob justice, medieval blasphemy criminal process in court and 2-year jail.
Balinese did it well, classy, and nobody got hurt. That is why Bali is in the top 10 world tourist destinations for decades.

Well they are breaking the law. They are bloggers here on a tourist visa for SEVEN years apparently?
There are many westerners in SE Asia for extended periods. As long as they have a visa, or exit often enough to stay within the letter of the law, it doesn’t matter to me.

I’d guess they buy stuff, and contribute to the local economy. Certainly moreso, than most of the Chinese package tourists.

You probably didn't have any racist intend, but there is no need to emphasize the Chinese part. It's not relevant to the story.
Well, given the choice between having busloads of digital nomads or busloads of Chinese tourists I know what I.would select.

As long as they are all in Bali it makes it easier to just avoid one place only

There have been lots of Chinese tour operators who controlled most or all monetary aspects of Balinese tours. They only used Chinese national tour guides, only stopped at Chinese owned/controlled gift shops, restaurants, and I’d guess hotels, too.

This takes most if not all the tourism dollars out of Indonesian’s pockets. Locals have to make money, too.
