What's old, is new again. Einstein said that "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result". Yes you probably have guessed what my ranting means... I will most likely be moving back to Indonesia again soon. My current adventure, "Living in Malaysia", while it was quite interesting, and not necessarily being concluded forever, is reaching the end of it's current chapter. The MM2H (Malaysia My Second Home) visa program is a great thing, but the weather there wore me down like a ball bearing without lubrication.

So here goes nothing...
Hi everyone! My name is Tom. My wife and I are retired and plan to relocate to Indonesia from Malaysia within a few weeks. It looks like we will be renting a house in the Bogor suburb of Sentul City. Are there any expats living in the area that can give me some current event tips or advice that might be useful to a new comer? As you might have guessed, I'm not a newbee. I have lived in Indonesia before and vacation there periodically. But 10 years have passed, and as is life, things change and visiting a place is different that living there.

What brings me back? Well the 3F's did. Food, Family, and Fortune.

Welcome back @IndoTom !

Sentul seems lovely, it's been developed quite a bit recently to make it more livable as main residence than just a weekend getaway. Unfortunately I don't know the place that well to give any advice.

My wife likes Sentul a lot and found a quite nice villa to call home. Now just the rental paperwork to complete so we can start transporting out stuff to Indo via several flights back and forth between KL and Jakarta. Luckily Malindo Air business class fares can be quite a bargan, starting at approximately $110 oneway, and include 40kg of luggage + 10kg carry-on.

I envy relocating persons who can manage all their essentials into a few checked bags. Welcome back, to the son-of-forum; I cannot truthfully welcome you back to Indonesia, as our household is currently domiciled in the Midwestern USA. We will be visiting for a couple of month beginning mid-June. Our East Jakarta house is a stones throw from Sentul, but I have only a passing knowledge of the place, as in passing by on the way to Bogor. Good luck with your move.

I can guess which one was the determining factor.

Welcome back.

PS: Do you really think the Malaysian climate is 'worse'? I understand Jakarta is approx 2 °C warmer than Bogor, but Johor Bahru is not thát different, right?

I can take the heat, its the humidity that gets on your nerves. At least Indonesia has a few mountains to cool off at when you need a break.

Migration checklist:
1. House rented in Sentual City. (check)
2. Hire maid. (check)
3. Buy car. A good reliable Toyota Innova. (in progress)
4. Move our stuff via several trips back and fourth via airline. Thanks to Malindo Air business class 40kg limit
5. Transport cat from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta. (in progress) What a nightmare on the Maaysian side. The export agents are terrible about contacting you back and explaining who and what needs to be done and what they do or don't do. The total estimated cost, USD $1300. Yes I'm getting a bule price whipping on this one. (in progress)

Apparently Sentual City is going through a growth period. A new Aeon shopping mall and condo residence should be completed before the shopping holiday starts in November - December. There is a new Giant brand shopping complex with J.co donuts and Bread Talk stores, which should keep me happy for a while. This is definately a place where you need a car. The residence complexes are too far from the shopping areas to walk to anything.

Indeed. If you enjoy walking, I did some hiking in the country side around there, it was very enjoyable.

But with all this development, I wonder if the hiking trails still exist.

10 years ago I remember driving home from the Punchuck pass mountain back roads and eventually came out back to civilization 2 hours later near the Sentul toll road. It was quite a scenic drive, passing by resort areas and open spaces that I never see from the main road up the mountain. My wife wants to try to do it again but I suspect some of it will have been developed by now.
