Halal refrigerator?

Sharp has applied for a Halal status with Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) of their fridges (kulkas, from the Dutch ‘koelkast’).

It seems there are parts of a (traditional) fridge that are of animal origin and they obviously should not get in touch with the halal food inside.

I wonder though how far one can take this and what that could mean for all wrapping and packaging material? And what about clothes, furniture and vehicles?

Marketing ploy. short and simple.

What about cars with leather seats?

You can put your Halal honey in it, I worked for petromin ministry when I was in Saudi looking after a G2 flying Sheik Yamani around, one day I was chatting to the American logistics Manager about some of the strange stock he had, Look at at this, he said, and he showed me two rolls of very nice pig skin leather, I asked what on earth that was for, he said the G2 seats were pig skin, Grumman had used pig skin, mind the seats looked very nice, but nobody told the saudis

I can't wait until they sell halal chairs.

Ok I think you are missing the point, as far fetch as it is that a refrigerator can cross contaminate your food , I understand the logic. But then you bring up chairs and seats on a plane ...Oh my god...You aren' serving food on them or in this case storing your food in them. Of course it's A marketing gimmick .
From what I understand of halal law similar to kosher laws it' all about stuff you ingest so if you don' eat your pig sink plane seat , it' ok.

It's a brilliant marketing strategy. Especially if you can drum up that all other refrigerators are haram.

It’s strange fridges have been in use for many years, suddenly one is halal, bit as you say a marketing ploy, honey is suddenly Halal after many centuries, in the last couple of years we’ve had two laundries open, they are Halal, I asked my wife about this and she said perhaps the soaps or detergents yes are piggy free, so does that mean in supermarkets we are going to see halal soaps and detergents, as far as I know nobody has questioned this items,

Regarding the pig skin seats the Saudis would be very upset if the knew they were sitting on pig skin, nothing to do with halal fridges, but when Saudi started flying the Tristar, their logo Saudi airlines, the S and the A were shaped to form a crucifix, on the first class film screen a Star of David had been interwoven into the pattern of the screen back, both these errors were not noticed by the Saudis, until told by an American mechanic, they were not well pleased, all aircraft, vehicles, work coveralls and anything else had to be changed to the present logo

Not terribly surprising. There's a whole host of appliances aimed at Jewish consumers for similar purposes. In a country with a fairly large number of observant Muslims it makes perfect marketing sense to appeal to their spiritual and material desires.

It’s quite amazing what some people do to avoid the religious rule

i did a review about moslem community in Indonesia, and apparently the word 'halal', 'hijab', 'pictures of people wearing hijab at the cover of an advertisement' or 'ingredients that are mentioned in Quran' triggers people to believe it's meant for them and it must be suitable for them as moslem consumer.
so we have 'halal clothing' , 'halal detergent', 'halal softener' , halal dishwashing liquid .... and suddenly people forgot what halal means. ... and doing the focus group discussion, they gave some statements that makes me wonder,' seriously ????"
