President Jokowi wants an easier process for foreigner work permits
Indonesia's investment grade is improving and Jokowi continues to set a course designed to make Indonesia a much more competitive and investor-friendly nation.

In an intitaive geared to improve the Ease of Doing Business (EODB) in Indonesia and to make the counrty more competitive in the global market place, President Jokowi wants the process for foreigner work permits to be made easier.

After a limited meeting around the topic of increasing exports and investments, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said that the president wants the whole foreigner work permit process to be less convoluted and he has instructed all relevant ministries to comply.

The Ministeries of Manpower and Transmigration, Justice and Human Rights, Trade and Industry, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources have been given just two weeks to simplify the process according to Republika.

Pramono said that if this is not immediately implemented and resolved the president will issue a Presidential Decree (called Perpres) to ensure that it is.

Foreign workers who are most likely to be affected would only be those at management and director levels.

Good news for those in management / director positions, but teachers should notice that the Ministry of Education was notably absent from the list of Ministries affected. Hence, the IMTA / KITAS process for foreign teachers is unlikely to change.

No kidding here: the first thing I've done after reading Davita's OP title was.... to check the date it has been published because my first thought was: "Hey! that's an old news! Two years ago respected Pak Jokowi already wanted "an easier process for foreigner work permits" and already "instructed all relevant ministries to comply."
What the heck has been done since this 2 years old meeting? Everybody fell asleep? He should ask Bu Susi to bomb their office to wake them up if he wants any result.

Ask Bu Susi to get her explosives and bombs...hilarious.....:pound:I just knew she would retaliate after they tried to muzzle her.

What would a Presidential Decree accomplish that just asking them to wont? Isn't it the same, just more official?

A presidential decree is a law, that is superior to than any minister can issue, and certainly higher than anything a DirJen can write. Many of the onerous regulations actually stem from this level. They are usually in charge of the technical implementation of higher level laws. Higher level laws are usually very broad, such as "Foreigners married to Indonesians are allowed a KITAS". Nothing in there says about how to actually apply for one, what forms you need to bring etc.
So if you need to bring documents a, b, and c, have them in triplicate, and it has to be in a red folder, etc etc, that is the kind of stuff that these regulations worry about.

Long overdue. Indonesia will certainly benefit from making it easier for foreign talent to obtain work permits, especially at the manager and director level where much more skill/mentoring is transferred to locals.

:tsk: too bad.
