Hi all,

Since we are probably moving away from Jakarta soon. Figured that I should reach out and see if anyone had anything to share about Makassar.

Cheers,

Will

Hi Will J, welcome to the forum.
I don't have anything to share about Makassar, sorry. Just wanted to pop in & say hi.

Welcome, I was there a few years ago, some interesting fish restaurants , I lost my wallet so I went back to the shop I last had it, there it was on the counter, some honest person had picked it up in the shop and handed it in, I was very impressed, so I'm sure you will enjoy living there, dinning on fish and cumi

Hope to be able to share more about Makassar as I learn about it.

That's fantastic, being a pescatarian, sounds like I will not go hungry.

I have been a couple of times. I kinda liked it. But I met a German fella who didnt, he explained the name was actually, MacSUCKa... since he figured it sucked.

Welcome to the forum! Sorry not much to say about Makassar, never been there.

I think they get a lot of Dutch visitors, because they kept asking me if I was Dutch, my great great grandfather was, but they sort of lost interest then

Transfer in the airport is hell. But heard good things about the area. We live up in north sulawsie and love it here.

Welcome, my partner has worked in maros on and off a couple of times in the last few years for a few months at a time. I visited him recently and we had a wonderful time in the area. Ramang2 is stunning (prominently featured in the recent Indonesian tourist video..the one with "its a wonderful world"). So are the karst areas around Maros. Didn't spend much time in Makassar itself, it seems like a standard Indonesian city (a smallish city thankfully). Taxis were expensive, uber was a much better price. Sorry that this isn't specific to Makassar but thought it would be helpful to share regardless.

I've been living between Makassar and Bira for last 5 years. I got married localy last year and got a kid already. The town is defenitively not "love at first site" and there's practically no "bule culture". The locals are much rougher/direct in manners than Java/Bali (Ma-KASAR), but not aggressive people. I love the town, it's original messy indonesian city, and growing fast. Food is also good, but western food is a bit pricey. spent my first year in Indo in Makassar, back in 2000 when there were hardly any private cars and nobody spoke English.

pm if you have any questions,

Rock

Thank you for all the little gems of advice.

It has been a hectic move, since we have a young baby. Its not really finished yet because we have yet to move the car and the contents of out Jakarta home.

We have found a nice place to stay, kind of like a kemang house. Still adjusting to my new life, working from home.

To help with the baby we brought our assistant along with us from Jakarta, but she will not stay with us, finding a replacement has not been easy. There are none for us to meet. If anyone has any leads just let me know.

Setting up the home was pretty simple, for Internet and TV we got Indiehome, so that is goodbye Netflix :.(

So far I like Makassar. It is a breath of fresh air to be out of Jakarta. Of course losing our super modern apartment, with security and all the facility bells and whistles you could expect, has been difficult.

I can't wait for the now year to find the stability and start exploring the region.

Happy Holidays!

Will

Yeah looks like they get a lot of Dutch visitors. We were staying at the Novotel for a couple weeks and you do notice these groups of 10 or more Bules having breakfast together. Was always wondering what they were doing here.

North Sulawesi = Manado? been once and i quite liked it too.

When were you last at the airport. It has seriously changed since I was getting stuck there in about 2009. they even have a Starbucks now. One real problem is there are no "free" smoking areas. most cafe would have a smoke room, but there is a minimum spend and you always want to quit after 10 seconds in one of them.

You can even find Erdingers at Bistropolis now. I darn't check the price. Large cans of Bintang will do for me.

They got a free area just about in the middle upstairs right next to a coffee place. They even have lighters on strings in case they get your lighter in inspection.
Lol we know where all the good smoking areas are in airports, jakarta even has some freindly cats in one of there smoking areas.

You know it' is liberating giving up all those bells and whistles if you let it. We have so much less crap now and loving it. A walk in the village when the power is out and the rain is pouring down is wonderful. Everyone is sitting under there porch visiting. But it does scare the shit out if me when you are walking (We use a flashlight) and out of nowhere in the darkness someone says malam. Im sure they do it on purpose.

Anyway we have found less is more.
