Hi Will J, welcome to the forum.
I don't have anything to share about Makassar, sorry. Just wanted to pop in & say hi.
Welcome, I was there a few years ago, some interesting fish restaurants , I lost my wallet so I went back to the shop I last had it, there it was on the counter, some honest person had picked it up in the shop and handed it in, I was very impressed, so I'm sure you will enjoy living there, dinning on fish and cumi
Hi all,
Since we are probably moving away from Jakarta soon. Figured that I should reach out and see if anyone had anything to share about Makassar.
Cheers,
Will
I think they get a lot of Dutch visitors, because they kept asking me if I was Dutch, my great great grandfather was, but they sort of lost interest then
Transfer in the airport is hell. But heard good things about the area. We live up in north sulawsie and love it here.
I have been a couple of times. I kinda liked it. But I met a German fella who didnt, he explained the name was actually, MacSUCKa... since he figured it sucked.
They got a free area just about in the middle upstairs right next to a coffee place. They even have lighters on strings in case they get your lighter in inspection.North Sulawesi = Manado? been once and i quite liked it too.
When were you last at the airport. It has seriously changed since I was getting stuck there in about 2009. they even have a Starbucks now. One real problem is there are no "free" smoking areas. most cafe would have a smoke room, but there is a minimum spend and you always want to quit after 10 seconds in one of them.
You know it' is liberating giving up all those bells and whistles if you let it. We have so much less crap now and loving it. A walk in the village when the power is out and the rain is pouring down is wonderful. Everyone is sitting under there porch visiting. But it does scare the shit out if me when you are walking (We use a flashlight) and out of nowhere in the darkness someone says malam. Im sure they do it on purpose.Thank you for all the little gems of advice.
It has been a hectic move, since we have a young baby. Its not really finished yet because we have yet to move the car and the contents of out Jakarta home.
We have found a nice place to stay, kind of like a kemang house. Still adjusting to my new life, working from home.
To help with the baby we brought our assistant along with us from Jakarta, but she will not stay with us, finding a replacement has not been easy. There are none for us to meet. If anyone has any leads just let me know.
Setting up the home was pretty simple, for Internet and TV we got Indiehome, so that is goodbye Netflix :.(
So far I like Makassar. It is a breath of fresh air to be out of Jakarta. Of course losing our super modern apartment, with security and all the facility bells and whistles you could expect, has been difficult.
I can't wait for the now year to find the stability and start exploring the region.
Happy Holidays!
Will
Yeah looks like they get a lot of Dutch visitors.
